What I’m Working on Now
Leah has commitment issues. Maybe it stems from the fact that her parents have an indifferent marriage. They have never argued or talked about divorce; they just exist together in the comfort of their overstuffed TV chairs and the blessedness of the whiskey fumes in their aura. The only family conversation in their home in south Chicago was about the importance of Leah going to college and Leah mixing their next drink.
Without much going on in the home, Leah couldn’t wait to leave for college, even if it was just the local junior college. Not having anything to fall back on, she graduated with a 4.0 average and went on to the state college and maintained her grade point average. And she did it with scholarships and working as a waitress at a boutique luxury hotel downtown.
With her lithe body and the fresh face of a teen, Leah has no trouble attracting dates; she just can’t pick the men who are actually available. She’s had a string of bad men with no chance of finding better quality boyfriends with the job she has. That’s because she’s a bartender earning good money, but working the late shift to earn the best tips. She’s getting the men into the bar, but they’re all deadbeats. Now she’s looking for a way to land a better job with better hours with the piece of paper her parents promised her would be her ticket to success. Unfortunately she’s not having much success in the current job market.
Erik grew up the only son of immigrants from Hungary. His father was a computer engineer who provided him with a structured home life in north Chicago with the expectation that he would follow them into a good college. Erik and his father were continually at odds about his education, forcing him to leave home at eighteen. Working his way up from sweeping and cleaning local bars, he left the bars behind and got into liquor distribution. He’s gotten through his wild and nefarious years of scratching his way to success and is ready to build a new extension of his business.
